What was the main story for the G1 Transformers line?

This is the famous G1 TF show. I have seen only six episodes, and that was at Botcon. From what I've seen, it was a rockin' good time. It was more adult than BW or BM ever was. Even its humor was more subtle than BW's more slapstick (esp. "The Low Road" [the low point in TF history]) nature. Plus, it lasted for four seasons and 96 episodes; compare that to BW's 3 seasons and 52 eps and BM's 2 seasons and 26 eps. Need I say more? [note: the eps with a * I have seen]
